Review: Michael Showalter, Eugene Mirman and Leo Allen
By Shannon on Monday, April 3rd, 2006
Michael Showalter, Eugene Mirman and Leo Allen must have been feeling like UNCOOLKIDS when they came up with the theme for last Friday’s show at Warsaw: Junior High Talent Show.
The three comedians proved that everyone was a freak when they were younger.
Allen (SNL writer, Slovin and Allen) learned at a young age that a quickie comeback can be the difference between looking cool or being labeled a dork. So he prepared a comeback for every possible situation, and shared them with us:

Showalter (Stella, Wet Hot American Summer) was actually brave enough to show us some pictures from his Junior High days, and even broke out a video of his ‘four part rap-harmony’ group performing their hit song, “Swiss Cheese Sandwich”.

And the always brilliant Eugene Mirman (Invite Them Up) took a break from his set to show us an actual poster from his Junior High Presidential Campaign:

Later he did an impression of Abe Lincoln delivering a pizza in a hurricane. It’s hard to believe he didn’t win the election.
The “talent show” part of the evening was no joke. Interspersed between the comedy acts, honest-to-god Junior High kids performed. There was a kid who juggled (KNIVES!), a girl who danced (ala Britney Spears) and an A Capella troop that covered Mr. Brightside by The Killers. Other comedians also were also on hand to show off their talents. Jon Benjamin (Dr. Katz, Home Movies) read from his novel-in-progress about a young boy fighting heroin addiction, and Nazis. Seth Herzog wow-ed us with his breakdancing skills, and Zac Orth represented the A/V club and ran the projector.
After the show eveyone was treated to an old school Junior High dance, with Mirman and Showalter DJing. And in true Junior High fashion, everyone stood around feeling awkward, waiting for their parents to pick them up.
